About Downs Baptist Church
What we Believe

We are members of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Evangelical Alliance. Both of these sites have some excellent information about what Christians believe, and what the Baptist Church is all about.

We are currently looking at a "purpose driven" approach to our church. To find out more about this, please take a look at the Purpose Driven Church website.

History of Downs Baptist Church

Downs Baptist Church was founded in 1923, when a group of Christians began meeting in the Downs Hall. For a short time they also met in the local laundry, which led to a temporary building being created for the church on an adjoining plot.

In 1930 a piece of land was purchased for a new church building, which was dedicated in 1932. In 1991, however, the building became inadequate for the Church's expanding activities, and we now meet in Woodingdean Primary School on Sunday mornings and Rudyard Kipling School on Sunday evenings. Please see the home page for more info regarding service times etc.

We currently have around 80 members, and are involved in many aspects of life in Woodingdean, such as running a greengrocers shop, and several groups for children and young people.

In the Future

These are very exciting times for Downs Baptist Church. We are planning to build a new church on the old bakery site, at the top of Woodingdean. We have been granted planning permission by the council.
