History of Downs Baptist Church

Downs Baptist Church was founded in 1923, when a group of Christians began meeting in the Downs Hall. For a short time they also met in the local laundry, which led to a temporary building being created for the church on an adjoining plot.

In 1930 a piece of land was purchased for a new church building, which was dedicated in 1932. In 1991, however, the building became inadequate for the Church's expanding activities, and we now meet in Woodingdean Primary School on Sunday mornings and Rudyard Kipling School on Sunday evenings, and use other buildings in the community during the week.

We currently have around 80 members, and are involved in many aspects of life in Woodingdean, such as running a greengrocers shop,  a community resource centre, and several groups for children and young people.
